Playtime Magazine Review

Overview

The concept for this project was to capture the emotion and aesthetic of Jacques Tati's 1967 comedy/drama film Playtime for an experimental section of a magazine. The film is somewhat eerie in its composition, allowing spaces to feel empty and futuristic, while still maintaining its lighthearted tone. The plotline is linear, yet sparse and non-specific, allowing the viewer to imprint their own emotions onto the film and its two characters. The excerpt also features a review of the film by Monsieur Hulot.

To capture the strange vibe of this film, I decided to learn how to artfully scan photos on the library's scanner. I collaged bits and pieces from the film's intro scene (a grey, surrealistic cubicle scene) and the film's final scene (a bright, busy roundabout scene indicative of a circus) in order to create a topsy turvy, confusing, abstracted pattern for accent throughout the pages. One was collaged classically, by ripping out pieces and repasting them, and then intentionally scanning erratically in waves. The other was those same two photos woven together and similarly waved for effect. I kept the text of the article similarly experimental, taking inspiration from the shapes and environment of the film.
